Youth and experience form the backbone of The Greens’ ‘dream team’ for upcoming Council elections. Manoeuvring for position is under way in political parties in advance of the next Local Government Elections due for Saturday, 14 September 2024. The Greens are the first party to declare their lead candidates for the September poll, with incumbent Councillors Kristyn Glanville and Miranda Korzy both announcing they will run again in Curl Curl and Pittwater wards respectively.
Continue readingCycling advocates are claiming a partial victory after a long-running proposal for a bicycle path running north to south from Curl Curl Lagoon to Freshwater Village moves a step closer to realisation. At their 30 April meeting, Councillors agreed that the proposed cycle path along Oliver Street, Bennett Street and Park Street (from Freshwater to Curl Curl) should be separated from pedestrians. This would make it an on-road lane, a change from the previously proposed shared bike-footpath to one side, away from vehicle traffic but at the cost of 43 trees.
Continue readingThe Australian Government has committed to protect 30% of Australia’s land and seas by 2030 and a range of other commitments in its Nature Positive Plan to not only conserve nature, but repair and expand it. This will be no mean feat to achieve. In the last 4 years alone, over 379,000 hectares of native vegetation was cleared in NSW. Only 50% of NSW threatened species are expected to survive in 100 years. We’re currently going 120km/h down the highway in the wrong direction. In parallel to the biodiversity crisis, we have a housing crisis. 14,000 households on the Northern Beaches are in rental or mortgage stress. While there are many factors that feed into this crisis, one of them is a shortfall of housing supply.
Continue readingThe issue of responsible dog ownership is set to be raised at Northern Beaches Council by The Greens Councillor Kristyn Glanville (image above). Cr Glanville plans to introduce a motion that will seek to reward responsible pet owners who invest in measures such as obedience classes. “The purpose of this motion is to encourage responsible dog ownership and identify any further opportunities to set local residents up for success at raising their dog.

Continue readingDid you know each person on the Northern Beaches generates on average 400 kilos of waste per year? Who hasn’t been frustrated to see waste clogging up our natural environment? Waste is a huge problem for Sydney, as we are projected to run out of landfill space within 10-15 years. While for a time we may be able to outsource the problem, sending Sydney’s waste to regional areas, or shipping plastic overseas, this is really just treating the problem as ‘out of sight and out of mind’.
